North Africa Campaign Opens

Italian forces under Marshal Graziani invaded Egypt from Libya, beginning the North Africa campaign. The British Eighth Army under General Wavell mounted a counter-offensive (Operation Compass) that devastated Italian forces in December 1940. Germany would deploy the Afrika Korps under Rommel in early 1941 to rescue the Italian position.
