Battle of Britain — RAF Defeats Luftwaffe

| World War II

Germany launched an air campaign to destroy the RAF as a precondition for the planned invasion of Britain (Operation Sea Lion). RAF Fighter Command, aided by radar and Ultra intelligence, defeated the Luftwaffe in three months of intense aerial combat. By October 1940, Hitler postponed the invasion indefinitely — Britain's first major Allied victory.
