France Signs Armistice — Vichy Government Formed

| World War II

France signed an armistice with Germany in the same railway car where Germany accepted defeat in WWI. Northern France and the Atlantic coast came under German occupation; southern France became the collaborationist 'Vichy' regime under Marshal Pétain. General de Gaulle fled to London and continued resistance from exile.
