Armistice Signed — The 11th Hour of the 11th Day

| World War I

German civilian delegates signed the Armistice in Marshal Foch's railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne, ending hostilities on the Western Front at 11:00 AM. Despite knowing the ceasefire was imminent, commanders on both sides continued ordering attacks until the final minute. The American 89th Division lost 11 men in the last hour. In London, church bells rang for the first time since 1914. The war had lasted 1,567 days and killed over 17 million people.
