Kaiser Wilhelm II Abdicates
Chancellor Prince Max of Baden announced Kaiser Wilhelm II's abdication without the Kaiser's consent to prevent revolution, as Berlin was in turmoil. Wilhelm fled to the Netherlands, where he lived in exile until his death in 1941. Two German Republics were proclaimed in Berlin on the same day: Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann proclaimed the German Republic; Karl Liebknecht proclaimed a free socialist republic. Germany had 48 hours to sign the Armistice.
