Austria-Hungary Signs Armistice

| World War I

Austria-Hungary signed the Armistice of Villa Giusti, ending the war on the Italian Front. The Habsburg Empire had already begun dissolving as nationalities declared independence: Czechoslovakia (Oct 28), Yugoslavia (Oct 29), Hungary (Oct 31). Emperor Karl I renounced participation in government (but did not formally abdicate) on November 11. The 640-year-old Habsburg Empire ceased to exist, fundamentally restructuring Central Europe.
