Mexico City Olympics Open — Movement Silenced
The XIX Olympic Games open in Mexico City on October 12, 1968 — ten days after the massacre. The Díaz Ordaz government presents an image of stability and modernity to the world. Internationally, coverage of the massacre is largely overshadowed by the Games, including the Black Power salute of Tommie Smith and John Carlos on October 16. Mexican authorities continue detaining student activists throughout the Games.
