Elena Poniatowska Begins Collecting Survivor Testimony
Journalist Elena Poniatowska begins interviewing survivors, witnesses, and victims' families, collecting hundreds of first-hand accounts of the massacre and its aftermath. Her resulting oral history, La Noche de Tlatelolco (The Night of Tlatelolco, published 1971), becomes a landmark work of documentary journalism and a major source for all subsequent investigations. The government attempts to suppress the book.
