Government Claims Students Fired First — Press Blackout

| Tlatelolco 1968

The morning after the massacre, the Interior Ministry and government-aligned press present the official narrative: armed provocateurs opened fire on the army, which responded in self-defense. Mexican newspapers under government pressure largely echo the official account. Foreign correspondents are surveilled and some are expelled. The government claims only 30 died. Interior Secretary Echeverría chairs the press management operation.
