Chadian Forces Shoot Civilians at Um Dukhun Border; 5 Killed, 14 Injured on Eid al-Fitr
Chadian troops opened fire on civilians gathered near the Sudan-Chad border in Um Dukhun, Central Darfur, on Eid al-Fitr, killing 5 people and injuring 14. Eyewitnesses described families from both sides of the border celebrating the holiday with traditional dances when Chadian soldiers first attempted to disperse the crowd, then fired on people as they fled. Chadian forces reportedly pursued fleeing individuals up to 10 km inside Sudanese territory. The Chadian military said the operation targeted smugglers. Dozens of people were arrested and their fate remained unknown. The incident added to Chad-Sudan border tensions following Chad's closure of the 1,300 km border after an RSF drone killed 17 Chadians in Tine on March 18.
