Day 710: Mexican Navy Marine Killed, Three Wounded in IED Ambush During Civil-Protection River Patrol in Mazatlán
On July 3, 2026, Mexican Navy (SEMAR) personnel conducting river and dam monitoring — a civil-protection mission to identify potential water surges, not a combat operation — in the community of San Marcos, Mazatlán municipality, were ambushed with improvised explosive devices by members of a criminal group. One marine was killed and three others were wounded in the attack. The killing was cited five days later by Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch during a report on 20 months of federal security operations in Sinaloa (Oct 2024–Jun 2026), which he said had produced a 44% reduction in the average daily homicide rate since June 2025, alongside 2,540 detentions, 94.5 tonnes of drugs seized (including 2 million fentanyl pills), 5,900 firearms confiscated, and 2,412 clandestine labs dismantled by roughly 16,440 deployed federal personnel.
