M8.2 Earthquake Strikes Chiapas-Oaxaca Coast
The strongest earthquake in Mexico in 100 years (Mw 8.2) struck off the coast at the Chiapas-Oaxaca border (Tehuantepec region) at 11:49 PM local time. The earthquake killed 98 people — 72 in Oaxaca, 15 in Chiapas, others in Tabasco — and caused massive damage in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, where the historic town center was effectively destroyed. More than 800 aftershocks followed.
