M7.1 Mexico City Earthquake: 369 Dead, Rébsamen School Collapses

| Peña Nieto (2012–2018)

A Mw 7.1 earthquake struck the Puebla-Morelos border at 1:14 PM local time on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. 369 people were killed: 228 in Mexico City, 74 in Morelos, 45 in Puebla, and 13 in Estado de México. Enrique Rébsamen primary school in Tlalpan collapsed, killing 26 children and 6 adults. Massive civil society mobilization — thousands of volunteer rescuers ('topos') — contrasted with government criticism for slow and bureaucratic response.
