Gasolinazo: Fuel Prices Jump 14–20% Overnight
As part of the energy sector liberalization, the government removed fuel price subsidies on January 1, 2017, causing gasoline prices to jump 14–20% overnight. The policy triggered the largest popular backlash of the sexenio: nationwide protests, looting of more than 1,500 businesses, highway blockades, and at least 6 deaths in unrest. The term 'gasolinazo' — a Mexican slang term for gas price shocks — became a symbol of government insensitivity to the poor.
