UN Investigators: Myanmar Military Has Escalated Airstrikes on Civilians

| Myanmar

The UN's Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) reported on August 11, 2026 that the military has escalated aerial attacks on civilians using low-cost motorized paragliders, gyrocopters, and drones, and documented a pattern of 'double-tap' strikes hitting first responders. Drawing on over 1,600 sources, the IIMM said more than 8,000 civilians have been killed and 31,000+ arrested since the 2021 coup. The Arakan Army separately said about 20 civilians were killed and 22 injured in Rakhine airstrikes from August 1-11 alone.
