SAC Armed Forces Day: Soe Win Announces Imminent Presidential Selection
On Myanmar Armed Forces Day (March 27), Vice-Senior General Soe Win announced that a president and vice presidents would be selected within days and that state responsibilities would transfer to a nominal civilian government. Min Aung Hlaing is widely expected to assume the presidency. The announcement followed the convening of a junta-packed parliament on March 16, seated after elections that the NUG, ASEAN, the US, EU, and UN condemned as illegitimate and non-representative. Analysts assessed the transfer as a cosmetic rebranding rather than a genuine power shift — the military retains 25% of parliamentary seats under the 2008 constitution, and Min Aung Hlaing would maintain ultimate authority as president. The NUG rejected the transition as theater designed to secure ASEAN re-engagement and international legitimacy while the military continues its armed campaign.
