One Year Since Great Sagaing Earthquake — M4.2 Aftershock Strikes Near Mandalay

| Myanmar

March 28, 2026 marked the first anniversary of the 7.7-magnitude Great Sagaing Earthquake (March 28, 2025), which killed an estimated 3,800–5,352 people and left 6.3 million needing immediate assistance across Mandalay and Sagaing regions — areas already devastated by four years of civil war. On the anniversary, a M4.2 aftershock struck near Mandalay, renewing fears among displaced communities. UN OCHA reported that one year on, over 3.6–4 million people remain internally displaced across Myanmar, with 16.2 million in need of humanitarian assistance and 12 million facing acute hunger in 2026. The 2026 Humanitarian and Resilience Plan (HNRP) requested US$890 million but was only approximately 25% funded as of March. The combination of conflict, earthquake damage, and aid access restrictions continues to produce one of Asia's worst humanitarian emergencies.
