Junta Grants Mass Amnesty to Over 10,000 Prisoners Ahead of Parliament

| Myanmar

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing authorized the release of 10,162 inmates — 7,337 convicted under Myanmar's counterterrorism law — to mark Peasants' Day, two weeks before parliament was set to convene. An additional 12,487 facing prosecution or in hiding had their cases closed. Critics called the amnesty a calculated bid for legitimacy rather than genuine reform; Aung San Suu Kyi, now 80 and serving 27 years, was not among those released. According to AAPP, over 22,800 political detainees remained in custody as of the announcement.
