INE Approves Two New National Parties, Denies Two Others
The INE's General Council unanimously approved national party registration for 'Paz' (Construyendo Sociedades de Paz) and 'Somos México' (Personas Sumando), effective July 1, 2026, giving Mexico eight registered national parties for the first time — alongside Morena, PAN, PRI, PVEM, PT, and Movimiento Ciudadano — ahead of the 2027 midterm elections. Somos México, led by Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo, was conditioned to change its name, emblem, and colors by August 31 because the INE found its current denomination too closely tied to national identity; the party said it would challenge the requirement in court. In the same session, the Council denied registration to 'México Tiene Vida' — citing the participation of 98 religious ministers (a banned practice) that invalidated enough assemblies to fall below the 200-assembly minimum, plus unaccounted expenses and evidence of attempted bribery — and to 'Que Siga la Democracia,' after investigators found 92 member records with altered photographs and forged credentials.
