Second-Round Judicial Elections Postponed to 2028
The Diario Oficial de la Federación published a Sheinbaum-sponsored constitutional decree moving the second round of federal and local judicial elections from 2027 to June 2028, so the vote would not collide with the 2027 midterm renewal of Congress, governorships, and local legislatures. The reform also shifted the presidential recall referendum to 2028, cut judicial candidate lists to two names chosen by lottery, and authorized the Supreme Court to sit in two sections. The change followed the chaotic, 13%-turnout first round of judicial elections in June 2025 — the first popular vote for judges in Mexican history.
