Woll's Raid — Mexico Briefly Retakes San Antonio
General Adrián Woll led a 1,200-man Mexican force across the Rio Grande and captured San Antonio on September 11, 1842, holding it for nine days and capturing several Texas district court officials. Texan militia under Mathew Caldwell defeated Woll at the Battle of Salado Creek on September 18, forcing a Mexican withdrawal. The raid demonstrated that the Republic of Texas remained insecure and Mexico had not abandoned its territorial claims.
