Treaties of Velasco — Santa Anna Recognizes Texas

| Mexico-US Wars

As a captive of the Texan government, Santa Anna signed two Treaties of Velasco — one public and one secret. The public treaty ended hostilities and required Mexican withdrawal south of the Rio Grande. The secret treaty promised to work for Texas recognition and a boundary at the Rio Grande in exchange for his freedom. The Mexican government repudiated both treaties, asserting Santa Anna had no authority to sign under duress.
