Texas Admitted as 28th US State
President Polk signed the legislation admitting Texas as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. Texas entered as a slave state, claiming the Rio Grande as its southwestern boundary — a claim Mexico vigorously disputed, insisting the traditional border was the Nueces River approximately 130 miles to the north. This boundary dispute would be the immediate trigger for war.
