Joint Resolution of Congress Annexes Texas
To circumvent the Senate two-thirds requirement, President Tyler and incoming President Polk used a simple majority joint resolution to annex Texas in March 1845. Texas voters and a special convention approved the terms in July 1845. Mexico immediately broke diplomatic relations with the United States, calling annexation an act of aggression. The US-Mexico war was now a near-certainty.
