United States Recognizes the Republic of Texas

On his last day in office, President Andrew Jackson extended formal diplomatic recognition to the Republic of Texas. Jackson had deliberately delayed recognition to avoid inflaming sectional tensions and risking war with Mexico before the 1836 election. The recognition was the first step toward eventual annexation but fell short of the immediate union that Texan president Houston and most Texans desired.
