General Musharraf Overthrows Nawaz Sharif in Military Coup

Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Pervez Musharraf overthrew PM Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup on October 12, 1999, while Sharif was attempting to dismiss Musharraf and divert his returning aircraft. Musharraf, one of the architects of the Kargil operation, became Chief Executive and later President. The coup derailed the nascent India-Pakistan peace process and set back democratic governance in Pakistan.
