Nawaz Sharif Meets Clinton in Washington — Pakistan Agrees to Withdraw
Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif flew to Washington on July 4, 1999 (American Independence Day) and met US President Clinton. Under intense American pressure, Sharif agreed to withdraw Pakistani forces to the LOC. The withdrawal was seen as a humiliating climbdown in Pakistan and contributed to the October 1999 military coup. India insisted on complete withdrawal before any talks.
