Karachi Agreement Formalizes Ceasefire Line
The Karachi Agreement of July 27, 1949 formally defined the ceasefire line in Kashmir between Indian and Pakistani forces, witnessed by UNCIP military advisers. The agreement designated a demilitarized zone in some areas but the broader issue of a plebiscite remained unresolved. This document remained the foundational border instrument until the 1972 Simla Agreement.
