Ceasefire Line Established in Kashmir
A UN-brokered ceasefire came into effect on January 1, 1949, ending the First Kashmir War. The ceasefire line divided Kashmir, with India holding approximately two-thirds (Jammu, Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh) and Pakistan holding one-third (Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan). This line later became the Line of Control (LOC) after the 1972 Simla Agreement.
