UN Security Council Calls for Ceasefire in Kashmir

| India-Pakistan

The UN Security Council passed Resolution 39 on January 17, 1948, calling for a ceasefire in Kashmir and establishing the UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP). The resolution called for the withdrawal of Pakistani forces and tribesmen, and eventually a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices. Subsequent resolutions laid out conditions that were never fulfilled.
