Indian Troops Airlifted to Srinagar
Within hours of the Maharaja signing the accession, Indian Army troops of the 1st Sikh Regiment were airlifted into Srinagar airport on October 27, 1947 — the first time an airlift was used in combat operations in the subcontinent. The troops halted the tribal advance just outside Srinagar and began pushing them back.
