Civil Defence Completes Recovery of 112 Bodies From 2023 Sabra Strike Rubble
Palestinian Civil Defence crews completed a 17-day operation on August 1, 2026 to recover the remains of 112 people — members of the Abu Shari'a and al-Hasayna families, including 40 children, 38 women, and 7 people with disabilities — from beneath the rubble of homes in the Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City. The families were killed when an Israeli strike flattened the residential block on November 23, 2023, in an incident that killed over 300 people in total; the bodies of 41 others from the same strike have still not been recovered. The recovered remains were buried in a mass funeral in Gaza City on August 4, attended by thousands of mourners. Gaza officials estimate close to 15,000 people remain missing under rubble across the Strip, far above the roughly 6,000 officially registered.
