Fatah-Backed List Wins Gaza's First Municipal Election in 20+ Years; Abbas Loyalists Sweep West Bank
Results confirmed on April 26–27, 2026 from Gaza's first municipal elections in over two decades showed the Fatah-affiliated 'Nahdat Deir el-Balah' list won 6 of 15 seats in Deir al-Balah, the only Gaza locale deemed stable enough to hold a vote. Abbas loyalists simultaneously swept West Bank elections. Voter turnout was approximately 23% out of ~70,000 registered voters; Hamas was excluded from participation. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas hailed the vote as a democratic milestone and a sign that Palestinians can self-govern under the PA's framework. The results are being used to bolster the PA's claim to post-war Gaza governance — though critics note the election was conducted in a single, relatively secure location while most of Gaza remains under active military pressure, and Hamas retains organizational presence. Israeli government officials have not formally recognized the electoral outcome's governance implications.
