Gaza Holds First Municipal Elections in Over 20 Years in Deir al-Balah

Gaza held its first municipal elections in over 20 years on April 25–26, 2026, with voting limited to Deir al-Balah — the central Gaza city that has served as a humanitarian hub throughout the conflict. The vote represented a symbolic step toward governance amid the stalled Phase 2 ceasefire negotiations, which remain deadlocked over Hamas disarmament demands. Hamas has conditioned any disarmament discussion on a full Israeli withdrawal and recognition of Palestinian statehood. US Special Advisor Aryeh Lightstone met Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya in Cairo the previous week as part of ongoing ceasefire-implementation talks. Al Jazeera noted on April 26 that the Gaza question faces growing uncertainty now that US diplomatic attention is increasingly focused on the Iran and Lebanon ceasefire deals.
