First Direct US-Hamas Talks Since Ceasefire Begin in Cairo; No Breakthrough
In a historic first since the October 2025 ceasefire, US special advisor Aryeh Lightstone and Board of Peace Director General Nickolay Mladenov held direct talks with senior Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya in Cairo on the night of April 14–15, 2026. It was the first direct US-Hamas engagement since the ceasefire framework began. Hamas insisted Israel must fulfill Phase 1 commitments — halt all strikes and restore full aid access — before any Phase 2 governance and disarmament discussion. No breakthrough was announced; the State Department declined to comment citing confidentiality. As of April 20, Israeli strikes are continuing daily across Gaza, with IDF reporting 14 Hamas ceasefire violations for the April 8–16 period while Gaza's Government Media Office counts over 2,400 Israeli violations since October 2025. The diplomatic impasse has stalled $17 billion in pledged reconstruction funding.
