Schengen Agreement Signed — Border-Free Travel Begins
Five of the ten EEC members (France, West Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) signed the Schengen Agreement aboard a riverboat on the Moselle River near the Luxembourg village of Schengen. The accord abolished systematic border controls between signatory states. The convention implementing Schengen was signed in 1990 and entered into force in 1995, eventually expanding to encompass most EU and some non-EU European states.
