Greece Joins — Mediterranean Enlargement Begins

Greece became the 10th member of the European Communities, the first Mediterranean country to join. Greece had applied in 1975 after the restoration of democracy following the military junta. The accession was partly motivated by a desire to consolidate Greece's democratic transition. It opened the door to the 'Mediterranean enlargement' that would later include Spain and Portugal.
