First Direct Elections to the European Parliament
For the first time, citizens of the nine EEC member states voted directly for Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Previously, MEPs had been appointed by national parliaments. Simone Veil, a French politician and Holocaust survivor, became the first directly elected President of the European Parliament. Turnout averaged around 63%, though this would decline in subsequent elections.
