First Enlargement: UK, Ireland, and Denmark Join
The United Kingdom, Ireland, and Denmark became members of the European Communities, expanding the original six to nine member states. After de Gaulle's resignation in 1969, negotiations proceeded under his successor Georges Pompidou. Norway had negotiated membership but rejected it in a referendum in September 1972. This enlargement effectively doubled the Community's English-speaking population.
