EEC Customs Union Completed Ahead of Schedule

The EEC completed its internal customs union 18 months ahead of the Treaty of Rome's schedule. All tariffs on trade between member states were eliminated and a common external tariff (CET) was introduced. This was the first major achievement of the common market project and a significant boost to intra-Community trade.
