DRC Ebola Death Toll Surpasses 1,000 in Fastest Fatal Surge on Record

The DRC Ministry of Health reported 1,031 confirmed deaths and 2,473 confirmed cases as of 22 July 2026, with 737 patients in isolation or hospitalized. It took 67 days for the outbreak to cross the 1,000-death milestone, versus 142 days for the 2014 West Africa epidemic to reach the same toll — making it the fastest fatal surge in Ebola's recorded history. Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya said: 'These are people dying. They are dying because we don't have vaccines, we don't have medicine, we don't have funding... If we do not stop it today, this will become the worst outbreak the world has ever documented.' WHO incident manager Thierno Balde said the response 'remains ahead of us and we are still in a phase of catching up.'
