WHO Reports Signs of Stabilisation in Mongbwalu and Goma as DRC Cases Pass 2,400

WHO Incident Manager Dr. Thierno Balde told a UN Geneva press briefing on 21 July 2026 that the Bundibugyo virus outbreak stood at 2,423 confirmed cases, 967 deaths and 469 recoveries as of 19 July, with Ituri Province still accounting for close to 90% of cases and over 80% of deaths. He said transmission patterns varied sharply by location: 'Mongbwalu is currently showing some signs of stabilisation with a similar trend in Goma, North Kivu province,' while Bunia and its surrounding areas remained sites of intense ongoing transmission and some newly affected areas were just beginning to see cases. He added no secondary cases had been detected in Kisangani, Tshopo province. Despite the localized stabilisation signals, Balde cautioned that 'this outbreak remains ahead of us and we are still in the phase of catching up.'
