Uganda Declares End of 2026 Ebola Outbreak

Uganda's Ministry of Health officially declared the end of its 2026 Ebola outbreak on 28 July 2026, citing complete epidemiological investigation, identification of the outbreak's DRC-imported source, and successful contact tracing with no further community transmission. The declaration came before the standard WHO 42-day waiting period, which Uganda argued was not the sole criterion once an outbreak is fully characterized with confirmed epidemiological closure. Uganda's outbreak totaled 20 confirmed cases, 18 recoveries and 2 deaths; the last patient was discharged 16 July after testing negative. Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi said: 'Today, Uganda is Ebola-free.' Uganda's border with DRC remained closed as the DRC outbreak continued to escalate.
