Cuba Joins COMECON
Cuba became a full member of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON), integrating with the Soviet economic bloc. The USSR provided oil at below-market prices, purchased sugar at above-market prices, and provided over $1 billion per year in subsidies. Cuba became dependent on Soviet support for its economic survival.
