Freedom Flights Begin
The US and Cuba negotiated an airlift program (Freedom Flights/Vuelos de la Libertad) allowing Cubans to emigrate to the United States. Between 1965 and 1973, more than 260,000 Cubans emigrated via twice-daily flights. The program accelerated Cuba's brain drain but reduced pressure on the Castro government.
