Angola Peace Accord Signed
Cuba, Angola, and South Africa signed the New York Accords, providing for the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola and South African troops from Namibia. Over 50,000 Cuban soldiers had served in Angola over 13 years; Cuba claimed 2,000 casualties. The accords paved the way for Namibian independence.
