17-Year-Old Shot Dead in Tepito as Unión Tepito–Anti-Unión Turf War Reaches 24 Deaths in 2026
A 17-year-old was shot and killed on the evening of Monday, August 10, at the corner of Toltecas and Peñón streets in the Morelos neighborhood (Tepito), Cuauhtémoc borough. Hours later, SSC officers used surveillance footage and a virtual cordon to detain a 24-year-old suspect carrying 25 bags of marijuana and 500 grams of the plant; he was turned over to the Ministerio Público. Infobae reported the killing as the latest in an ongoing turf war between La Unión Tepito and a breakaway Anti-Unión Tepito faction, which the outlet said had produced 24 deaths in the Centro Histórico zone during 2026. The SSC said it detained 55 alleged members of the two organizations during July and early August as part of a strategy targeting high-impact crime in the capital's central zone.
