Culiacanazo: Ovidio Guzmán Captured and Released

| AMLO (2018–2024)

A 35-officer convoy detained Ovidio Guzmán López, son of imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel leader El Chapo, in Culiacán. Within hours, an estimated 700 armed gunmen deployed burning vehicle roadblocks, armored vehicles, and .50 caliber weapons throughout the city, taking eight soldiers hostage and triggering a prison break of 56 inmates. President AMLO ordered Guzmán released to halt the bloodshed, saying lives were more valuable than one arrest. At least 10 security forces, 19 cartel gunmen, and one officer were killed. The episode became the defining symbol of 'abrazos no balazos' doctrine's limits.
