Tren Maya Indigenous Consultation Held

AMLO held a formal public consultation on the Tren Maya — a proposed 1,554 km inter-city railway traversing the Yucatán Peninsula — across the five affected states (Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo). With only a 2.36% turnout, 92.3% voted in favor. Indigenous and environmental rights groups challenged the consultation as failing to comply with international free, prior, and informed consent standards. Full construction was slated to begin in 2020 — initially with a budget of approximately 150 billion pesos. This was Mexico's largest infrastructure project in decades.
