National Guard Constitutional Reform Passed

Congress passed the constitutional reform creating the Guardia Nacional (National Guard) on February 28, 2019, absorbing units from the Federal Police, Army Military Police, and Naval Infantry Police. The reform mandated civilian control be established within five years. The National Guard adopted the motto 'Justice and Peace' and was officially established June 30, 2019. Almost immediately after formation, AMLO deployed the bulk of the force to Mexico's southern border with Guatemala — fulfilling a deal with the Trump administration to curb Central American migration.
